Medicare Plans in Austin, TX: A Local Starting Point

New to Medicare in Austin, or just tired of guessing? Most people here land on either a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan or a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy. If you are near 65, newly retired from the state, the University of Texas or a tech job, or just reviewing what you already have, knowing the difference between these two paths matters. Annual Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7 every year.

This page walks through how Medicare works for residents of Travis, Williamson and Hays counties, what plan types are sold here, and how to match a plan to your doctors, your prescriptions and your budget.

The Two Main Paths for Austin Medicare Beneficiaries

Once you enroll in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), residents of Austin and the nearby suburbs generally choose one of two directions for the rest of their coverage.

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

Medicare Advantage bundles your coverage into a single plan sold by a private carrier approved by Medicare. Most plans sold around Austin, Round Rock and Pflugerville include:

  • Hospital and medical coverage
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Provider networks
  • Copays and out-of-pocket limits

Some plans add dental, vision or hearing benefits, though the actual dollar value differs by carrier and plan type.

Advantage tends to appeal to retirees who want a lower monthly premium, bundled extras and coordinated care through a network. Provider access is the catch. Networks shift year to year, so confirming that St. David's Medical Center, Dell Seton or Baylor Scott & White Austin still accepts a plan before you enroll is worth the phone call. Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement insurance works alongside Original Medicare and helps cover the costs Medicare leaves behind, such as deductibles and coinsurance. Medigap plans typically offer nationwide provider access, predictable medical bills, no referral requirements and no network restrictions.

Prescription drugs are not part of Medigap. You will need a separate Part D plan for medication coverage.

Medigap often fits people who travel or split time between Texas and another state, retirees who want fewer surprise bills, or anyone who sees several specialists and wants freedom to choose them. See Medicare Supplement plans in Austin.

Questions

Medicare in Austin: common questions

When can I enroll in or change Medicare coverage in Austin?
Most people first enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period, the seven months around their 65th birthday month. After that, Annual Open Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7 each year, and changes start January 1. See Annual Open Enrollment in Austin.
What does Part B cost in 2026?
The 2026 standard Part B premium is $202.90 a month, and the Part B deductible is $283 for the year. People with higher incomes pay more based on their tax return from two years earlier.
Does a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan cover prescriptions?
No. Medigap plans sold today do not include drug coverage. Most people who pick Medigap add a separate Part D drug plan to avoid a late enrollment penalty.
Can I have both Medicare Advantage and Medigap?
No. They are an either-or choice. A Medigap policy cannot pay costs under a Medicare Advantage plan. Compare the two on Advantage vs. Medigap.
Where can I get free, unbiased Medicare counseling in Texas?
Texas's State Health Insurance Assistance Program is HICAP (Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program). It offers free counseling at 1-800-252-9240, and the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area's benefits counselors answer at 512-916-6178. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE or use Medicare.gov.
Does it cost anything to use your agency?
No. Our help is free. Agents are paid by the insurance carriers, and your premium is the same whether you enroll through us or directly with the plan.
