Medicare in Lakeway
What Lakeway residents should know
Lakeway has a full hospital close to home. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Lakeway on Medical Parkway runs an emergency department with specialists on call around the clock. It is a STEMI center for severe heart attacks, a designated stroke center and a Level IV trauma center. The same campus has a Heart and Vascular Institute, orthopedics, surgery, imaging and inpatient rehab. St. David's HealthCare runs a 24-hour emergency center in nearby Bee Cave, and its South Austin Medical Center is a Level II trauma center.
That mix shapes your plan choice. A Medicare Advantage HMO usually keeps you inside one network, except for emergencies. If your family doctor is with Baylor Scott & White and your heart doctor is with St. David's, check that both are in the plan before you enroll. A Medicare Supplement works another way. Plan G or Plan N lets you see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, with no referrals. You pay a monthly premium for that freedom. Drug coverage differs too. Most Advantage plans include Part D. With a Supplement, you buy a separate Part D plan, so check that your drugs and pharmacy are on its list.
Getting to appointments takes some planning. CapMetro does not list Lakeway among the cities it serves, so most residents use a car or get a ride. The Service League of Greater Lakeway used to give rides, but the city says rides stopped because of a volunteer shortage. Drive a Senior offers free door-to-door rides for older adults in Travis County, including trips to doctors and the pharmacy. Call its central line at 512-472-6339 to ask whether your address is covered.
Local help is close by. The Lakeway Activity Center at 105 Cross Creek hosts bridge clubs, quilting, painting and dance groups, plus adult classes like yoga, tai chi and pickleball. Call 512-261-1010. The Service League still lends wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs and canes at no charge to residents of Lakeway and The Hills. For free one-on-one Medicare counseling, HICAP counselors at the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area answer at 512-916-6178.
