Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in Austin, TX

Original Medicare pays most of your hospital and doctor bills, but not all of them. A Medicare Supplement plan, often called Medigap, picks up the deductibles, coinsurance and copays Medicare leaves behind, so your yearly cost stays close to fixed.

Medigap is standardized by letter, so a Plan G from one company pays exactly the same benefits as a Plan G from another. The real differences are price, service and how the company handles rate increases over time.

  • Keep any doctor who takes Medicare
  • Predictable monthly premium, few surprises
  • No referrals and no provider network
  • Travel coverage anywhere in the U.S.

How it works

Medicare pays first, your Medigap plan picks up the rest

You keep Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) as your main coverage. When you visit St. David's Medical Center, Dell Seton or any clinic around Austin that accepts Medicare, the claim goes to Medicare first. Whatever share Medicare does not pay is sent automatically to your Medigap company. On Plan G, the only bill most members see for Medicare-covered care is the annual Part B deductible, which is $283 in 2026.

Because there is no network, you never have to check whether a specialist is in plan. If they accept Medicare, you are covered, whether you are in Austin, visiting family out of state, or spending a few weeks on the coast. Medigap does not include drug coverage, so most people pair it with a standalone Part D drug plan.

That freedom matters around Austin, where people often split care between systems. You might see a family doctor with Baylor Scott & White in Round Rock, a cardiologist at the Heart Hospital of Austin, and get cancer care or surgery through Ascension Seton downtown. Veterans may also use VA clinics alongside Medicare. With Medigap, any of those providers that accept Medicare work the same way. We help across Travis, Williamson and Hays counties.

Rates can rise, the plan doesn't change

Medigap benefits are locked by law, so a rate increase is the main thing to watch. We can re-shop your Plan G or Plan N each year so you are not paying a loyalty penalty for staying put.

Medigap does not include prescriptions

You will want a separate Part D plan. Skipping it when you are first eligible, without other creditable drug coverage, can trigger a lifelong late penalty.

Timing

Your open enrollment window matters more than anything else

For six months beginning the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B, you can buy any Medigap plan sold in Texas with no health questions at all. That is the one window where a diagnosis cannot raise your price or get you turned down.

After that window closes, carriers may use medical underwriting. Most people still qualify, but conditions like a recent heart procedure, oxygen use or insulin-dependent diabetes can limit choices. If you are turning 65 in Austin, start the conversation about three months early.

  • Six-month guaranteed-issue window starts with Part B
  • No network, no referrals, no annual plan shopping
  • Guaranteed renewable as long as you pay the premium
  • Special guaranteed-issue rights apply if a plan leaves your area

Is it right for you?

Who tends to choose Medigap around Austin

  • You see several specialists

Cardiology, oncology or orthopedics visits add up fast under copay-based plans. Medigap keeps those costs flat.
  • You want budget certainty

A higher known premium beats an unknown out-of-pocket maximum for many retirees on a fixed income.
  • You travel or split the year

Coverage follows you anywhere in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, with no out-of-area network worries.

If a lower monthly cost and built-in dental or fitness benefits matter more to you, compare this against Medicare Advantage in Austin, or read the side-by-side Advantage vs. Medigap comparison before deciding.

Underwriting

Applying outside a protected period

Inside your six-month Medigap open enrollment window, or when a guaranteed-issue right applies, health questions are off the table. Outside those periods, carriers may underwrite: they ask about diagnoses, procedures, medications and pending tests, and they can decline the application or offer a higher rate.

Guaranteed-issue rights exist in set situations. Your Advantage plan leaves the service area, an employer group plan ends, a carrier misled you, or you leave within the 12-month trial right after first joining an Advantage plan at 65. Those windows are short and easy to miss, which is why we ask about your history before we start an application rather than after it is declined.

If underwriting is likely to be a problem, we say so up front and look at Medicare Advantage instead of letting you collect a decline on your record. Already on a plan and thinking about a change? See switching your Medicare plan.

Rates

Rate increases, travel, and the yearly re-shop

How Medigap rates change

Benefits are fixed by law, so the only thing that moves is price. Many carriers price by attained age, meaning your premium rises as you get older and again when the carrier files a general increase. Two companies selling the identical Plan G can drift far apart over five years.

We can re-check your premium each year against the other carriers we represent. Moving usually requires passing underwriting, so it is a decision to make while you are healthy, not after a diagnosis.

Travel and access

With Original Medicare behind it, Medigap works with any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. There is no out-of-area rule, no referral, and no network to check before you see a specialist outside Central Texas.

Some Medigap plans, including Plan G and Plan N, include limited foreign travel emergency coverage. It is capped and has a deductible. It helps, but it is not a substitute for travel medical insurance on a long trip abroad.

Common questions

Medigap questions to ask before applying

When should I apply?
Ideally about three months before your Part B start date, so your six-month guaranteed-issue window is used rather than wasted. See the turning 65 timeline for the exact dates.
Do I still need a Part D plan?
Yes, unless you have other creditable drug coverage. Medigap never includes prescriptions. Pair it with a standalone Part D plan or you risk a lifelong late-enrollment penalty.
Can my Medigap plan be cancelled?
Not for health reasons. Medigap policies are guaranteed renewable as long as you pay the premium.
Is Plan F still available?
Only to people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Everyone else compares Plan G, Plan N and high-deductible Plan G.
Does the company I choose change my benefits?
No. A Plan G is a Plan G. What differs is the premium, the rate-increase history and how easy the company is to deal with on a claim.
Where can I get free, unbiased Medicare counseling in Texas?
Texas's State Health Insurance Assistance Program is called HICAP (Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program). It gives free, unbiased counseling. Call HICAP at 1-800-252-9240, or the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area at 512-916-6178.
