Medicare in Round Rock
What Round Rock residents should know
Round Rock has three full hospitals inside the city, and each belongs to a different system. St. David's Round Rock Medical Center on Round Rock Avenue is a Level II Trauma Center with a 24/7 emergency room. The Heart Hospital of Austin runs heart and vascular surgery on that campus, and the hospital treats stroke and cancer too. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center on University Boulevard offers 24/7 emergency care, heart and vascular care, cancer care and orthopedics. Ascension Seton Williamson on Seton Parkway is also a Level II Trauma Center, with heart, stroke, spine and orthopedic care.
That mix shapes your plan choice. A Medicare Advantage HMO usually keeps you inside one network, except for emergencies. If your heart doctor is with St. David's and your surgeon is with Baylor Scott & White, check that both are in the plan before you enroll. A Medicare Supplement works another way. Plan G or Plan N lets you see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, with no referrals. You pay a monthly premium for that freedom. Drug coverage differs too. Most Advantage plans include Part D. With a Supplement, you buy a separate Part D plan, so check that your drugs and pharmacy are on its list.
Getting to appointments takes some planning. The city pays CapMetro to run Route 50 inside Round Rock and Route 980 from the Round Rock Transit Center to downtown Austin. Riders 65 and older and Medicare cardholders can get half-price CapMetro fares with a Reduced Fare ID. For trips inside city limits, Round Rock Rides is an on-demand shared ride. Riders 65 and older with ID pay $2 a trip. Book in the app or call 512-312-2124. Rides run weekdays 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Local help is close by. The Allen R. Baca Center on West Bagdad Avenue is the city's center for adults 50 and older. It hosts benefits counseling, the AARP Smart Driver course, chair yoga and card games, plus a senior lunch for people 60 and older. The Round Rock Public Library sits downtown at 200 E. Liberty Ave. For free one-on-one Medicare counseling, call the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area at 512-916-6178, or the Texas HICAP line at 1-800-252-9240.
