Medicare in Pflugerville
What Pflugerville residents should know
Pflugerville has a hospital in town. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center on East Pflugerville Parkway runs a 24/7 emergency room with a Level 4 trauma center. It offers inpatient care, heart catheter procedures, orthopedic and general surgery, digestive care, imaging and mammograms. A retail pharmacy sits on the first floor. The campus is under construction, so allow extra time to park. For a larger hospital, St. David's North Austin Medical Center on North MoPac has a 24-hour emergency room, a heart and vascular center and kidney transplant care.
That mix shapes your plan choice. A Medicare Advantage HMO usually keeps you inside one network, except for emergencies. If your local doctor is with Baylor Scott & White and your heart doctor is with St. David's, check that both are in the plan before you enroll. A Medicare Supplement works another way. Plan G or Plan N lets you see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, with no referrals. You pay a monthly premium for that freedom. Drug coverage differs too. Most Advantage plans include Part D. With a Supplement, you buy a separate Part D plan, so check that your drugs and pharmacy are on its list.
Getting to appointments takes some planning. Pfetch a Ride is the city's ride program with Uber. You pay the first $4 of each trip, and the city covers up to $10 more. Each person gets up to 10 vouchers a month, and rides run 24/7 anywhere in city limits. You can also ride to Tech Ridge Park & Ride and catch CapMetro into Austin, where riders 65 and older pay half fare with a Reduced Fare ID. Download vouchers at pflugervilletx.gov. If you need a wheelchair van, Maruti Transportation Group books those rides at 210-227-1900.
Local help is close by. The Pflugerville Public Library at 1008 W. Pfluger St. runs Senior Services for adults 55 and older, with talks, computer classes and homebound book delivery. Travis County runs a community center at 15822 Foothill Farm Loop, Suite D. Call 512-854-1530 to ask which county aid programs it handles. Meals on Wheels Central Texas serves Travis County at 512-476-6325. For free one-on-one Medicare counseling, call the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area at 512-916-6178, or the Texas HICAP line at 1-800-252-9240.
